Costing almost £1bn, this will be the biggest redevelopment project in the 1000 year plus history of Hereford, and will restore the city’s reputation as a key shopping and business destination in the region. Adoption of the Masterplan, amended following public consultation, is due in Spring 2008. Work will start in 2010 and take up to 15 years to complete all phases, providing some 1,500 new jobs as well as 600 on construction work. Traffic problems on Newmarket Street/Blueschool Street, which will become a pedestrian friendly boulevard, will be eased by a new link road running through the site, from Edgar Street to the rail station junction with Commercial Road. There is very little cost to the ratepayer, the vast majority of funding coming from the private sector and AWM. At all stages the public will be fully consulted on the plans. It is an exciting time to be living in Hereford – The Place To Be.
