Young People
Herefordshire Council’s new vision for Hereford is much bigger even than ESG’s scheme and will create more than enough jobs to potentially secure full employment in the county. This supported by exciting new leisure facilities, a higher education campus and affordable housing, is key to helping Herefordshire retain its talented young people for the future.
Our plans are not just about addressing today’s generation, but tomorrow’s generations too, in order to provide more excitement, more fun and more opportunities for young people.
Your Future

The site: 100 acres to the north of the historic city centre.

ESG Herefordshire is about the future. Therefore it is vital that you play a part in helping to plan what the future will hold. After all, when the work is complete, it will be people like you who are living in the new housing, working with the new businesses and making the most of the lifestyle in the area.

Some say this project is unnecessary. We disagree and we have our reasons. We want
- To help satisfy the need for more family housing
- To reinforce and build on the vitality and quality of the city and the county;
- To stop people going to shop and do business elsewhere;
- To make one bigger, better city.

ESG Herefordshire Ltd is a company set up by the Herefordshire Council and Advantage West Midlands (AWM), the regional development agency, to oversee the development. Decisions are made by a Board of Directors and have to be approved by both the council and AWM. AWM fund the project, about £20 million has been allocated to date. By the end of the development the total investment value will be up to £750 million.

- Partners Sanctuary Housing Association - To oversee the Urban Village development
- Stanhope plc. - To oversee the development of the retail quarter.

- Hereford City Council;
- Hereford City Partnership;
- H&W Chamber of Commerce;
- H&W Federation of Small Businesses and other stakeholders.
Individuals and communities can also have their say and be involved in this way.

The whole project should be completed around 2020. The main points are:
- Move the livestock market out of the city centre (2009)
- Set up the flood alleviation scheme at Credenhill (2010)
- Begin phase 1 of the new link road (2011)
- Begin Urban Village development (2011)
- Begin building Shops and Leisure facilities (2012)
- Completion of Retail Quarter (2014)

'Infrastructure' including roads, water/electricity/gas/telecoms supplies and sewage systems have to be designed and accommodated before actual 'build' can happen. Many businesses have to be relocated from the development site, and we are still buying the land to be redeveloped as it becomes available.
